I collect many things. As long as it's history, I'm into it. I collect artifacts from the old American west. This includes items from American Indians.

My collection of Native American memorabilia is not large by collecting standards, but I have some things. This blog highlights my small collection. It does not include old west items. Those are on another blog. Check this blog out and, as always, thanks for stopping by ~

These pieces are from the 1950s-'60s.

Teepee toothpick holder. The toothpicks are as old of the teepee.

NOTE:

Back in the early 2000s, I worked security at the Goodyear Mold Plant in Stow, Ohio. Twice a year, I was visited by a family of Native Americans.

The family came from North or South Dakota twice a year to the Cleveland Clinic as their young son had health issues and he was checked out and treated there. I worked third shift from 11:00 pm until 7:00 am. They would arrive in a large van towing a closed box trailer around 2:00 to 4:00 am.

They lived on a reservation and made giftwares to sell to tourists. Every time they came, they would give me something. Goodyear allowed them to retrieve scrap metal. They used it in making their things to sell.

On one of their visits, they gave me these three belt buckles. One large and two smaller. All these years later, I really hope that their son is grown and doing alright.

Both of these baskets are made out of tree bark.

The rattle is made from a turtle shell and filled with the rattles from a rattlesnake.

When you shake it, it sounds just like a baby's rattle.

This is another item sound in a giftshop to tourists. It's from Cave City, Kentucky and dates to the late 1960s.

The pencils are tree branches that are drilled out and pencil lead added. In case an Indian has to write a check.

Turquoise bracelets.

Keychain. Another giftshop item. This is geared more toward the Aztecs of Mexico.

Coyote skull and face. Indians used every part of an animal that they could. Skulls and the faces were used in making headdresses, jewelry, etc.

This skull I believe is that of a normal house cat. Or, teepee cat. Indians kept cats around camps for the rodent problem.

I couldn't find any spears anywhere. So I made my own. I need to add feathers to them.

In the 1950s and '60s, my parents owned a home in Cook Forest, Pennsylvania. I was always at the many giftshops. At one I bought this tomahawk.

This type of tomahawk would have been used as a tool such as a hammer. Or, it could hammer the skulls of an enemy.

It was stamped "Cook Forest" on the handle.

NOTE:

While growing up during our summer stays at Cook Forest, I got to know many people from that area. Some were farmers who uncovered arrow and spear heads when the plowed their fields.

As they found these pieces, they would fill boxes with them and sell them to the giftshops of the area. Several gave me some of the arrowheads as well.

I also found a few while searching the forest myself.

There are also tool heads like the two here in the shape of crosses.

NOTE:

This movie prop gun is from the 1950s and '60s. It was used in several western productions starring John Wayne and others.

When an actor was to be hit on the head with a gun, a rubber prop such as this would be used. Also, when actors playing the roles of cavalry soldiers or Indians, and had to fall from a horse or a building, etc., They would fall with a rubber prop gun so as not to be hurt if the landed on it.

This rubber prop rifle is a Sharps carbine and was used in many Cowboy and Indian films. It came from the old Ellis Prop House of Hollywood, California.

Another rubber prop gun is this Winchester lever action. It was also used in John Wayne films and also came from Ellis Prop House.
